Which research area is the work in?

Weighted rules, not a black box.
Each answer applies a weighting to every compound in the catalog, and the three highest totals are returned. The research area carries by far the most weight, because it is the only answer that says anything about what is being studied. Whether you asked for a single compound or a blend comes next, then how well documented the compound is in our research library, then vial size.
Nothing is weighted by price, stock position or popularity. A compound cannot rank higher because it is expensive or because it sells well, and there is no editorial thumb on the scale for particular products. The labels attached to each result are the individual rules that fired for that compound, so a match can be read back rather than taken on trust.
Categories that share underlying literature are treated as adjacent, which is why a result occasionally comes from a neighbouring area. An adjacent match is labelled as such and scores roughly a third of a direct category match, so it will never displace a compound from the area you actually chose unless that area has very little in it.
The whole calculation runs in your browser. There is no account, no server call and no record kept — your answers are written into the page address so a result can be shared or bookmarked, and they disappear when you start again.
Seven research areas.
The areas are the catalog's own categories, so this table is generated from the live catalog rather than maintained by hand. Bacteriostatic water and solvents are reagents rather than a research area and are left out of the matching entirely.

What the quiz does not tell you.
The finder matches compounds to a research area. It does not suggest an amount, a schedule, a route of administration, or a combination to run, and it makes no claim about what any compound does in a living subject. A match means the published literature on that compound sits in the area you described — it is a starting point for reading, not a conclusion.
The match percentage is the share of the available score a compound earned against your answers. It is not a probability and not a quality ranking. Two compounds at the same percentage matched an equal weight of criteria, quite possibly for different reasons, and the labels on each result show which.
Where a compound has an entry in the research library, the result links straight to it, with every study tied to its PubMed record. That is the material worth reading before a compound goes anywhere near a protocol.
