Bacteriostatic water vs sterile water
Two reconstitution diluents that differ by one ingredient — 0.9% benzyl alcohol — which inhibits bacterial growth in an opened vial and defines how long a reconstituted solution can be held.
Sterile water for injection is water that has been sterilised and sealed; it contains nothing else. Bacteriostatic water is the same product with 0.9% benzyl alcohol added as a preservative. The distinction is invisible on the bench and decisive over time: sterility describes the water's state when the seal is broken, while bacteriostasis describes its resistance to contamination afterwards.
An opened vial of plain sterile water has no defence against the microorganisms introduced by each puncture, which is why single-use is its design assumption. The benzyl alcohol in bacteriostatic water inhibits bacterial growth through repeated draws from the same vial, and that difference — not any effect on the peptide itself — is what makes it the conventional diluent for solutions held over multiple sessions.
The preservative is not chemically inert in every context: benzyl alcohol is a solvent in its own right, and some laboratory applications specify preservative-free diluent for that reason.
