Batch or lot number

The identifier tying a vial to one specific synthesis run — the link that lets a certificate describe the material actually in hand rather than material in general.

A batch or lot number identifies one production run: one synthesis, one purification, one lyophilisation cycle. Every meaningful quality statement about a compound is a statement about a batch, because purity, water content and counterion profile all vary from run to run even when the process is nominally identical.

On a certificate of analysis, the batch number is the field that connects the document to a physical vial. A certificate that names no batch cannot be matched to anything, and a certificate whose batch differs from the vial's label is describing different material regardless of what its numbers say. Matching the two is the reader's step; the laboratory can only vouch for the sample it received.

The same identifier is what makes one certificate per batch the honest arrangement. A single certificate reused across a whole catalogue, or across successive restocks of one product, is describing at most one synthesis run of one compound. Each batch sold on this site carries its own report, published with the batch number and the issuing laboratory's reference alongside it.
