Cold chain
An unbroken sequence of temperature-controlled storage and transport from producer to end point — required for inherently unstable biologics, and distinct from the ambient shipping that stable lyophilised solids tolerate.
A cold chain is a logistics arrangement in which a product is held within a specified temperature range at every stage — production, warehousing, transport, delivery — with no gaps. It exists for materials that degrade quickly outside that range: vaccines, many biologic drugs, and other products whose active form does not survive ambient temperature for long.
Whether a material needs one is a property of the material, not a general rule for anything biological. Lyophilised peptides occupy the tolerant end of the spectrum: with water removed, the degradation chemistry that temperature accelerates has little to work with, and days at ambient temperature in transit cost sealed dry material little. This is the standing reason research peptides ship worldwide as ordinary parcels while reconstituted solutions of the same compounds belong in a refrigerator.
The term earns its place in careful reading because it is often invoked loosely. A cold chain is a specific, auditable claim about every link in a route; refrigerated storage at the two ends is not one.
